CHAPTER 15

“You okay, sweetheart?” Bryn said, sitting down next to Mia as the doctor finished plastering her arm. He could still see the tracks of tears on her cheeks, but now she was smiling valiantly back at him.

“Yes, I’m all better now.”

“Is it still hurting?’

She shook her head. “Only a little bit, but I’m going to be bwave for Mommy.”

“You’ve been a very brave girl all the way through.” The doctor smiled, smoothing on the last layer of wet plaster. “And when this dries you can have pictures drawn on it and your family and friends can write messages on it.”

Mia laughed. “And then all the kids at school will like me.”

“Oh Mia.” Bryn stopped his voice from cracking. “Your arm getting strong again is what matters.”

“Can we go home now?” Mia asked.

“Another twenty minutes to let this dry and you can be on your way,” the doctor said. “She was lucky she’s a minotaur,” he directed at Bryn. “That fall would have been much worse for an elf.”

“Hear that Mia, sweetheart?” Bryn said. “Remember I told you being a minotaur is the best thing ever? Now you know why.”

Mia lay back on the hospital plinth looking pleased. Bryn messaged his mom to let her know they’d be home soon.

He found himself wondering yet again how Ivy’s tour was going. He needed to let her know why he wasn’t there to greet her. He flicked a look at his watch; maybe he’d leave phoning until later. She’d be in the thick of showing folks round now and probably wouldn’t appreciate him distracting her. Although she’d wonder why he wasn’t there, wouldn’t she? He hoped Vlad would relay the message, but then, you never knew with Vlad. Bryn frowned. Sometimes the vampire liked to stir the pot.

What pot?

Heck, Bryn hadn’t worked out what was going on between him and Ivy. And if he didn’t know, how could Vlad possibly guess?

Except the wily vampire had a knack of sensing stuff. Vlad was one of the ancients, a first resident of Motham, and there was rarely a trick in the city he missed. And he could also make mischief. If he saw there was fun to be had, particularly to get back at humans, he wouldn’t hesitate.

Bryn guessed Vlad had his reasons for disliking humans—they’d tried to kill him enough times over the centuries, after all. But if Vlad did anything mean to Ivy he would personally kill the guy. The hairs on the back of Bryn’s neck stood up, his tail swishing sharply just at the thought of protecting his little human.

Mine.

There it was again. The absolute conviction that Ivy belonged to him, and he’d fight to the death to defend her. The doctor tapped him on the arm with the discharge papers for Mia, and he had no more time to think as he got them ready to leave, found Mia’s school bag and jumper and ordered a cab to take them home. He could hardly take a little girl with a broken arm on the back of his motorbike.
